AMMAN — University of Jordan professors and students recently discussed ways to combat extremism in a seminar titled “No to Extremism and Terrorism” at UJ’s Islamic Cultural Centre.
Sharia scholars said extremism and terrorism have no religion, and that they are a danger to the community and young people.
Students stressed the need to counter extremist ideology, which only serves to tarnish the image of Islam.
The centre’s director, Adnan Assaf, said confronting extremism can be achieved by abiding by the concept of religious moderation as preached in the Koran, and evident in the actions and sayings of Prophet Mohammad.
Also speaking at the seminar, Senator Nawal Faouri said a deeper understanding of Islam and its teachings will lead to a generation with a balanced ideology that respects others’ religious beliefs.
Students who spoke at the event emphasised the need for cooperation and solidarity to eradicate the “plague” of terrorism and extremism by raising awareness at the cultural and religious levels.
