AMMAN — The University of Jordan’s (UJ) recent inclusion among the top 500 universities globally is expected to unlock opportunities for global partnerships and enable students and faculty to engage in cutting-edge research.
UJ has solidified its position as the leading university in Jordan, maintaining its dominance among local institutions and securing the 12th spot in the Arab world, according to the latest 2024 QS World University Rankings. Globally, the university has claimed 498th place.
Notably, UJ stands as the sole Jordanian university to make it into the top 500 universities worldwide, out of 1,500 universities located across 104 countries, according to the UJ website.
Based on the most prominent criteria and performance indicators, UJ achieved a global ranking of 297th in academic reputation, an improvement of 19 places compared to the previous year.
It also secured the 250th spot in employer reputation and the 385th position in the international student indicator, both on a global scale.
UJ President Natheer Obaidat noted that the university’s ascent to 498th of the world’s top 500 universities was “not a surprise but rather a planned objective spanning over a decade”, as reported on the UJ website.
“There have been countless efforts and numerous achievements accumulated throughout the years to attain this goal,” Obaidat said.
Obaidat emphasised that the university’s inclusion among the world’s top 500 universities speaks well to Jordanian universities’ capability to achieve international recognition.
“The University of Jordan’s sustained top-ranking position among local universities and its distinguished standing in the Arab world showcase the commitment of past and current faculty members,” Mustafa Aryot, a UJ faculty member, told The Jordan Times.
Aryot noted that the achievement will attract renowned scholars and researchers to collaborate with the university, thereby enhancing its research capabilities and academic prestige.
UJ student Mohammad Neimat told the Jordan Times that he is “thrilled” to see UJ recognised as the best university in the country and among the top in the region.
Neimat suggested that the recognition will increase opportunities for UJ students, such as access to international scholarships, internships, networking and employment opportunities.
