UNICEF ambassador distributes wheelchairs to vulnerable children

AMMAN — UNICEF Andorra ambassador and world-renowned rally driver, Albert Llovera, has concluded a mission to Jordan to meet children benefitting from UNICEF-supported services.

During the visit, the UNICEF ambassador has distributed child-friendly wheelchairs to vulnerable children in camps and host community, according to a UNICEF statement.

Llovera met with children in a UNICEF-supported Makani (“my space” in Arabic) centre, who are receiving learning support, life skills, and child protection services, and a Drop-Out Centre providing out-of-school children with informal education, the statement said. 

“I am impressed by the strength and determination of the children that I met. Despite the challenges they face, they are committed to their education and a better future,” Llovera said. 

Llovera also visited Zaatari refugee camp where UNICEF is supporting education, Makani, child protection, water and sanitation and health services to 44,000 children. 

Llovera is a rally driver and former alpine skier from Andorra. He became the youngest athlete to compete in the Winter Olympics in 1984 at the age of 17. When a serious accident in 1985 resulted in him using a wheelchair and ended his skiing career, he was not deterred from his sporting dreams and took up rallying, using cars with specially adapted hand controls. He has competed across the world since.
