AMMAN — Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Wednesday highlighted the importance for UNRWA to continue extending full services to refugees in the educational, health and relief fields.
Meeting with UNRWA Commissioner General Pierre Krahenbuhl, Safadi stressed that supporting the UN’s Palestinian relief and works agency is an international responsibility towards refugees whose case is one of the final status issues in the peace talks between the Palestinians and Israelis, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
The minister reiterated that the refugee issue has to be solved in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions, especially the UN Resolution 194 and the Arab Peace Initiative, in a way that guarantees refugees’ rights to return and compensation.
Safadi and Krahenbuhl went over efforts exerted to cover the financial deficit at the agency, and to coordinate these endeavours to guarantee the sustainability of financial resources necessary to enable the agency to carry out its vital mission.
For his part, Krahenbuhl commended the Kingdom’s efforts, through contacts with influential international stakeholders, in finding effective and quick solutions to address UNRWA’s financial problems.
