AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Ayman Safadi and UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini on Tuesday discussed efforts to provide the financial support necessary to fill the financial gap faced by UNRWA and ensure the sustainability of its vital services to Palestinian refugees as per its UN mandate.
Safadi and Lazzarini stressed the need for the international community to take practical and urgent steps to provide the agency with financial support, according to a ministry statement.
The agency's financial empowerment and its ability to implement its UN mandate are of paramount importance for providing refugees with decent living conditions, Safadi said. UNRWA’s sustainability is an investment in security and stability, he added.
The minister also stressed the centrality of the agency's role in providing education and health services as well as relief aid to Palestine refugees.
Safadi also noted the need for UNRWA to continue working in accordance with its UN mandate until the refugee issue is resolved, and their right to return and compensation are guaranteed in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions and under a comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue based on the two-state solution.
For his part, Lazzarini voiced his appreciation for Jordan’s key role as the largest host and indirect supporter of Palestine refugees, and for mobilising financial and political support for UNRWA.
