AMMAN — A 23-year-old woman was killed and two of her family members were injured when they were run over by a vehicle late Monday night, official sources said.

The victim was walking with her husband and son near the Jordan Television area in Amman when the three were run over by a motorist, a senior traffic official said.

“The husband, 40, is in a critical condition while the young boy, who is three-years-old, is in a stable condition,” the traffic official told The Jordan Times.

The Civil Defence Department (CDD) rescue teams rushed to the scene and transported the injured to a nearby hospital, a CDD official said, noting that “the body of the deceased woman was taken to Al Bashir Hospital for a routine autopsy”.

The official added that traffic investigators determined that the driver of the vehicle was at fault because he “failed to abide by traffic safety regulations”.

This is the second traffic accident involving the running over of a group of people in less than a month.

On June 20, four family members in Zarqa, who just finished a visit to the zoo, were killed when a vehicle ran them over while standing near the side road.

Traffic officials attributed the tragic accident to wrongful overtaking on the part of the motorist.

According to Public Security Department statistics, there were 10,835 road accidents in 2016, resulting in 750 deaths and 17,435 injuries.

The annual cost of traffic accidents in Jordan is $2 billion, accounting for 5.59 per cent of the GDP, according to recent figures released by the Transport Ministry.
