AMMAN — A flag-hoisting ceremony was held in the municipality of Yonkers, New York, in celebration of Jordan’s 77th Independence Day, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Saturday.
Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, member of the New York State Assembly Nader Sayegh, and other officials and members of the Jordanian community attended the event. New York officially declared May 25 as "Jordanian-American Heritage Day in New York" following a decision made by the state's assembly, presented by Sayegh, a member of the assembly of Jordanian origin.
Highlighting the longstanding tradition, Sayegh said that the flag-raising ceremony has been an annual event in Yonkers since the 1970s, noting that the municipality is home to the largest Jordanian community outside of Jordan.
