CAPE TOWN — As Covid-19 infections on the African continent continue to move in an upward trajectory, Sudan has just breached the 10,000 mark in infections.

The country has 11,237 cases, while recording 708 fatalities since the country reported its first coronavirus case on April 13.

In Sudan, 5,835 people have recovered from the novel coronavirus.

The United Nations and humanitarian partners launched an addendum to the 2020 Sudan Humanitarian Response Plan to respond to the increasing humanitarian needs in the country, says Sudanese Radio Dabanga.

The UN humanitarian coordinator for Sudan, Gwi-Yeop Son, called on the international community to scale up its support to Sudan to address the most immediate and critical needs of millions of people affected by the health and humanitarian consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.

More than $283 million was urgently needed to support the government-led response and provide life-saving assistance to more than 6.7 million people across the country, said the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, according to Radio Dabanga.

Earlier this week, the World Health Organisation (WHO) expressed concern over the rapid rise in coronavirus on the continent.

Until recently, Africa had remained relatively unscathed by the coronavirus pandemic, but that has changed rapidly over the past few weeks as countries continue to record high daily infections.

The novel coronavirus was steadily spreading across Africa and the continent has now breached the 770,000 mark in infections, rising to 774,946 as of Tuesday.

According to a WHO situation update, there has been a 27 per cent rise in the number of infections in Africa in the past week.

A total of 16,495 people have died of Covid-19 on the continent, while 439,444 have fully recovered as of July 23, according to the latest real time data by Worldometer.
