Irbid building guard stabbed to death

AMMAN — Police on Monday said they were searching for suspects in connection with the murder of a building guard in Irbid a day earlier.

The 50-year-old victim’s son found him stabbed to death late Sunday night in the building in Irbid, 80km north of Amman, a senior official source said.

When forensic specialists arrived at the scene, “they identified burn marks on the victim’s clothes and speculated that most probably someone poured acid on him,” the source added.

A postmortem examination conducted by a team of pathologists headed by Ali Shotar detected several bruises on the victim’s head that were caused by a blunt object, a medical source said.

The pathologists also found 11 stab wounds on the victim’s back that were caused by a sharp object, the medical source told The Jordan Times.

“Pathologists sent the victim’s clothes, as well as blood and tissue samples, to the criminal lab for examination,” the medical source added.

A third source told The Jordan Times that theft “could be a motive behind the murder as the building was targeted by thieves on several occasions”.

Public Security Department Spokesperson Major Amer Sartawi confirmed the incident, but refused to reveal any further details, only saying that an investigation is under way.

“I cannot comment on this murder other than to say that there are suspicions of foul play related to the guard’s death,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.
