Jordanian foreign policy balances

Jordanian foreign policy is distinguished by its flexibility and its ability to balance relations with Arab countries and the West, thanks to Jordan's strategic geographical location and its ancient history, which has made it a major player in the region. This balance is also based on a combination of political pragmatism and commitment to principles, which has allowed Jordan to maintain good relations with all parties.

Jordan occupies a prominent position in the Arab world thanks to its pivotal role in many regional issues and Jordan is considered one of the few countries that enjoys good relations with most Arab countries. This was reflected in many diplomatic initiatives undertaken by Jordan to promote Arab unity and resolve regional conflicts.

For example, Jordan plays an important role in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, as it is one of the most prominent defenders of Palestinian rights in international forums, and by virtue of its geostrategic geographic neighbourhood, which places it at the heart of any effort seeking to achieve peace in the region. In addition, Jordan has played a mediating role in several Arab conflicts, including the Syrian crisis, as Jordan always seeks to support peaceful solutions and alleviate human suffering.

Jordanian relations with the Gulf states are strong and solid, and the Gulf states are among the most prominent economic supporters of Jordan, as these countries provide financial aid and important investments that contribute to supporting the Jordanian economy. In return, Jordan provides political and security support to the Gulf states, which enhances security and stability in the region. For example, Jordan participated in the Arab coalition to support legitimacy in Yemen, which reflects its commitment to the security and stability of the Gulf.

On the other hand, Jordanian relations with the West, especially the United States and the European Union, are characterised by stability and strength. The United States is considered one of Jordan's largest supporters, providing significant financial and military assistance. These relations have been strengthened through close cooperation in combating terrorism and enhancing regional security. The European Union is also an important economic and political partner for Jordan, as the Union supports many development projects and economic reforms in the country.

The balance in Jordanian foreign policy is represented by Jordan’s ability to maintain good relations with various parties despite the challenges. Jordan also always seeks to follow a moderate policy that guarantees its national interests without siding with any party at the expense of the other. This policy reflects a deep understanding of regional and international balances and is based on the principle of dialogue and cooperation.

For example, in the Syrian crisis, Jordan maintained diplomatic relations with the Syrian government, and at the same time, it hosted hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees and provided them with humanitarian support. It also maintained open channels of communication with all Arab and international parties towards Syria, which reflects a balanced policy that seeks to achieve stability and security in the region.

Despite the success of Jordanian foreign policy in achieving balance, the Kingdom faces many challenges, including Regional tensions and political instability in some neighbouring countries pose a threat to Jordanian security. Global economic crises also affect the Jordanian economy, which relies heavily on foreign aid and investments.

But at the same time, these challenges provide opportunities to enhance Jordan's regional and international role, as Jordan can play a greater role in mediation and conflict resolution, strengthening its position as a pivotal country in the region. It can also strengthen its economic relations with Arab and Western countries by enhancing trade and investment cooperation, which contributes to achieving sustainable development.

Finally, Jordanian foreign policy represents a model of balance and wisdom in managing international relations. Thanks to its wise leadership and its ability to adapt to regional and international changes, Jordan has succeeded in building strong relations with Arab countries and the West alike. This balance guarantees Jordan a distinguished position in the international arena and enhances its role as a factor of stability and peace in a region witnessing many challenges and conflicts.
