AMMAN — The Border Guards front surveillance units during Eid Al Fitr holiday detected and killed a person who tried to infiltrate into the Kingdom from Syria, Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) spokesperson said Tuesday.
The guards responded to the situation in line with the rules of engagement followed in such cases, resulting in the death of the infiltrator, who is of an Arab nationality the army did not specify.
The spokesperson was quoted by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, as saying that the soldiers spotted two other persons heading towards Jordanian territory from a valley and exchanged gunfire with them, resulting in the injury of one.
After bringing the situation under control, the spokesperson said, the guards searched the area and found drugs and automatic guns, Petra reported.
He also said that JAF is going on with its humanitarian mission, as Border Guards received 71 Syrian refugees during the past 72 hours, comprising all age groups, and transferred them to refugee camps.
Royal Medical Services’ personnel provided healthcare and necessary treatment to those injured among the new arrivals, he added.
The army has repeatedly warned that it will not tolerate any attempt to jeopardise the security of the country and people, and will not hesitate to use force in dealing with any border infiltration attempts.
