AMMAN — Criminal Investigation Department personnel have detained a woman after receiving complaints accusing her of fraud, the Public Security Department (PSD) said Sunday.
The woman claimed she could treat ailments through the use of magic and advertised in local media outlets.
The PSD said victims called phone numbers on the advertisement and the woman asked them to transfer money for the purchase of necessary ingredients, then disappeared after receiving the money.
The PSD said the woman confessed to these scams after they presented enough evidence to convict her.
The department urged the public not to fall prey to fraudsters claiming to practice magic and sorcery.
In a statement issued by its media centre, the PSD said many continue to be fooled by such fraudsters despite its frequent warnings.
It also urged media outlets to verify advertisements they receive before publishing them.
