AMMAN — At a meeting held on July 12 of this year, the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) granted Generations For Peace (GFP) ECOSOC consultative status.
ECOSOC consultative status provides non-governmental organisations (NGOs) access to ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, human rights mechanisms of the UN, ad-hoc processes on small arms, and opportunities to join special events organised by the president of the UN General Assembly, according to a statement posted on the GFP website.
There are currently 4,045 ECOSOC consultative status NGOs worldwide, with GFP recently joining the prestigious list. ECOSOC recognition is a significant feat for GFP, which also recently ranked as one of the world’s top Social Good Organisations (SGO) on SGO Adviser.
Reflecting on the achievement, Mohanned Arabiat, president of GFP, said: “The recognition and access that ECOSOC consultative status demonstrates the transparency of GFP’s decision making mechanisms, its representative structure, and the organisation’s sound processes to ensure accountability. ECOSOC consultative status provides us with valuable access to a range of human rights mechanisms that will help our organisation further its mission to empower others to continue transforming conflict into peace in communities worldwide.”
Founded by HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein in 2007, GFP implements volunteer-led, grassroots conflict transformation through programmes that focus on sport, art, advocacy, dialogue, empowerment and media activities in Jordan, and around the world.
Since its inception, the organisation has trained, mentored and supported more than 22,502 volunteers in 52 countries, impacting the lives of more than 1.4 million people worldwide.
