AMMAN — The Israeli aggression on Gaza threatens the entire region, and its repercussions will increase tensions and result in more confusion and instability in the Middle East, according to His Majesty King Abdullah.
In a telephone call with US President Barack Obama on Friday, the King discussed the latest developments in the region, particularly the situation in Gaza and regional and international efforts to put an end to the suffering of Palestinians, a Royal Court statement said.
His Majesty cited Jordan’s efforts at the international level to stop the Israeli aggression, end the blockade and start reconstruction work in the strip.
He underlined the importance of bolstering all efforts to bring an end to the Israeli offensive and alleviate the suffering of Palestinians.
The Monarch noted that the recent escalation in Gaza should push for intensifying international endeavours, especially those by the US, to bring back momentum to the peace process through negotiations that address final-status issues according to the two-state solution and international resolutions.
The two leaders agreed on the need to combat terrorist organisations that work to stoke sedition among the followers of different sects in the Middle East.
Discussions also covered the situation in Iraq, with His Majesty reiterating the need to preserve the unity and cohesion of Iraq and its people through a comprehensive political solution that engages all segments of society.
The King also underscored the need to come up with a political solution for the Syrian crisis that ends the suffering of the Syrian people.
He highlighted the pressure Jordan is enduring due to hosting around 1.4 million Syrians and the “huge” burden this has placed on its services and infrastructure.
King Abdullah thanked the US for the support it extends to the Kingdom to enable it to continue its humanitarian role towards the Syrians.
The two leaders also discussed bilateral ties and prospects to develop strategic relations.
Obama praised Jordan’s efforts to bring about peace and stability in the region, stressing his country’s commitment to improving ties with the Kingdom and coordinating on issues concerning the region, according to the statement.
