Man gets 12-year prison term for attempted murder of 2 brothers

AMMAN — The Cassation Court has upheld a February Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a man to 12 years in prison after convicting him of attempting to murder two brothers in Amman in December 2018. 

The Criminal Court declared the defendant guilty of stabbing the victims with a knife on December 3 following “a heated argument”. 

Court papers said the defendant went to discuss an old feud with the victims when “a heated argument” ensued between him and the two brothers.

“The argument turned into a scuffle and the defendant grabbed a knife and stabbed one of the two brothers in the chest,” court papers said.

The second brother attempted to escape but “the defendant followed him and attempted to stab him but his wounds were superficial,” according to court papers.

The victim survived the assault after undergoing surgery to his chest, the court papers added. 

However, attending physicians at the hospital determined that the injuries were life-threatening and he survived due to medical interference.

The defendant did not contest the verdict.

Meanwhile, the Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the ruling. 

The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment. 

The Cassation Court bench comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Fawzi Nahar, Nayef Samarat, Hayel Amr and Mohammad Khashashneh.
