AMMAN — The number of visitors to the ancient city of Petra increased in April by 16 per cent compared with the same period in 2013, according to figures released recently by Petra Archaeological Park.

A total of 92,802 tourists visited the city last month. Of the total number of visitors, 69,412 were foreigners, 12,293 were Jordanians and 11,097 were students and official guests.

The entry ticket revenues in April also increased by 12 per cent compared with the same month last year, from around JD1.354 million to some JD1.52 million.

Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority Chief Commissioner Mohammad Nawafleh said the increase is the first in April in three years — a sign that tourism in Petra is on the road to recovery.
