Princess Ghida visits Irbid to follow up on breast cancer campaign

AMMAN — HRH Princess Ghida Talal, chairperson of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF) and King Hussein Cancer Centre Centre (KHCC), on Wednesday visited Irbid governorate as part of the early detection of breast cancer campaign for October. 

The campaign falls within the framework of the Jordanian Breast Cancer Programme (JBCP), which was launched in 2009, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. 

During her visit, Princess Ghida said, "The JBCP is a national programme under the leadership and support of KHCF and KHCC and seeks to raise awareness among the community's various segments and orchestrate breast cancer early detection efforts nationwide."  

"In October each year, breast cancer is addressed and highlighted worldwide in order to emphasise the fight against the disease, as early detection examinations provide women with a 90 per cent chance to survive," Princess Ghida added.

Princess Ghida pointed out that the percentage of women who underwent treatment in the advanced stages declined from 70 to 35 per cent, as a result of the JBCP's tremendous efforts, various institutions' support and the participation of volunteers to convey the message to the community's various segments.

Princess Ghida encouraged all women to seek early detection examinations and conduct early screenings and breast cancer diagnoses that can increase the chances of healing, help reduce the cost of treatment and save the lives of thousands of women.

Asem Mansour, CEO and director general of KHCC, announced that the government would prepare a study of the reality cancer in Jordan which would include various aspects, such as cost and ways of developing patient services, and the study would be submitted to the government by the end of this year.

Nisrin Qatamesh, KHCF director general and JBCP director said that there are 75 sophisticated mammograms units spread over more than one city, a health centre and a hospital in the Kingdom, which all provide early screening services at the same levels provided at the KHCC.
