AMMAN — Masar Al Khair initiative has launched a project to train women on adding tassels to the Jordanian Shemagh, with the aim of empowering women in the Karak Governorate and help them start their own business, an organisers’ statement said.

In its first course, the project will include the training of 12 women by Thaera Arabiat, who said that the craft has been traditionally associated with women, yet, only a few of them masters it.

She noted that Shemagh embroidery is an income-generating craft which is highly demanded in local markets, referring to the traditional value of Shemagh to Jordanians.

Samira Rawashedeh, the director of the hosting charity organisation, praised the initiative which she said will teach rural women new skills.

She added that the organisers will help women in marketing their new products. Meanwhile, founder of the initiative, Mohammad Karakeh, expressed his pleasure with the initiative, which he believes will contribute to women empowerment in the governorate.
