AMMAN — The Central Traffic Department (CTD) on Thursday began implementing its yearly scheduled winter campaign to check on the vehicles in the Kingdom, according to officials.

“The yearly campaign aims to ensure that vehicles are prepared and equipped with the essential components needed for the winter season, in order to reduce road accidents,” said Public Security Directorate (PSD) Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi.

The campaign will be implemented by the Civil Defence Department, the relevant traffic directorates, and the Mass Media and Community Policing Directorate, Sartawi told The Jordan Times.

“The inspection entities will also include the Royal Department for Environment Protection and traffic technical and maintenance experts,” according to Sartawi.

The law-enforcement officers will inspect tyres, windshield wipers and their water tanks, seatbelts, lights and heating systems as well as external bodywork, according to a statement by the Public Security Department (PSD).

Stickers will be issued to vehicles that pass the inspections so that traffic officers do not stop the driver again for random inspection, the PSD statement added.

If a vehicle fails the inspection, the motorist will receive a notification to fix the problem within 10 days, according to the PSD statement.

If the driver fails to fix his/her vehicle, a ticket will be issued, the PSD statement added.

According to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Department, the total registered vehicles in the Kingdom in 2022 were approximately 2.1 million, which the department said was an increase of 3.94 from the year 2021.

The PSD used social media outlets to raise motorists’ awareness regarding the proper maintenance of their vehicles ahead of the winter season.

A woman named Amal wrote on the PSD’s Facebook page that the annual inspection is “an important procedure to preserve the safety of lives and public property”.

Meanwhile, Omar Ghzawi also praised the campaign on the PSD’s Facebook page by stating: “Your efforts are highly respected and praised,” Ghzawi wrote.
