AMMAN — A US national was hospitalised on Saturday after nearly drowning while swimming in the Aqaba Marine Park area, according to the Civil Defence Department (CDD).

Aqaba CDD Director Col. Mohammad Habahbeh told The Jordan Times that the woman was with a group of nine friends, noting that CDD cadres rescued her and took her to hospital.

He did not give further details.

On Friday, a 10-year-old boy drowned in the Dead Sea, and another boy was injured, the CDD said.

The child’s body was taken to the Southern Shuneh Hospital, along with a 12-year old who was injured in the same incident, the CDD said in a statement, adding that the injured boy was listed in fair condition.

Meanwhile, a fire erupted at a seven-storey building housing a sponge and polystyrene factory and storerooms for wood and furniture in the Bayader industrial area in west Amman.

It took four hours for a joint force from the CDD, the Greater Amman Municipality, and the gendarmerie and public security departments to put out the fire, which resulted in material damages but no injuries, the CDD said.

A committee has been formed to study the cause of the fire, the CDD added.

In Balqa’s Wadi Arreh area on Friday, five people were injured in a road accident and taken to Salt Public Hospital, where they were listed in fair condition.

At dawn on Saturday, a 62-year-old motorist died when his car accidentally hit a camel in Wadi Musa, Lt. Col. Yaser Habahbeh of the Central Traffic Department said.

“The camel also died in the accident,” he added.

On Friday, two died when a vehicle collided with an electricity pole in Irbid’s Mazar area, according to Habahbeh.

Meanwhile, a 26-year-old man died in a two-vehicle collision in Kufor Yuba’s Siteen Street in Irbid, the official added.

On the same day, a 15-year-old boy died when a vehicle, he was a passenger in, collided with an electricity pole in Wadi Musa, Habahbeh said.

On Thursday, four people were run over on Hurriyeh Street near Irsal traffic lights in Amman, the CDD said. They were taken to Hammaideh Hospital, where their condition ranged from fair to critical.

The same day, four people were injured in a two-vehicle collision in Zarqa. They were listed in fair condition at the Zarqa Public Hospital, according to the CDD.
