AMMAN — Britain’s ambassador to Jordan praised the Kingdom’s security, resilience and prosperity in a speech marking the birthday of Queen Elizabeth II on Monday.

“Jordan’s security, Jordan’s resilience, Jordan’s prosperity, is central to our purpose in this great country,” Edward Oakden said at an event to celebrate the British queen’s 90th birthday in Amman.

“Over the 70 years since Jordan’s independence, the United Kingdom and the Royal Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan have marched resolutely side by side. We are proud to be called your allies,” the ambassador added.

Oakden suggested that the monarchies of Jordan and the UK enjoyed “deep and abiding respect” because they epitomised “timeless qualities and values”, including a common dedication to the service of their countries.

The diplomat also voiced the UK’s support for the “compelling vision” of His Majesty King Abdullah, outlined on Sunday in his Letter of Designation to prime minister-designate Hani Mulki.

Oakden pointed to the National Employment Strategy, the forthcoming report of the Royal Commission for Human Resources Development and implementation of the London Conference outcomes as highlights of the letter.

Offering the UK’s “deep appreciation” for the outgoing government, Oakden promised that the UK would engage “with all our energies” to support the new Cabinet.
