AMMAN — A strange odour that permeated parts of Aqaba is “non-hazardous”, Aqaba Governor Ghassan Kayed said on Sunday, attributing the source of the smell to phosphoric acid and gases.

Some social media outlets reported on the odour, which was “not noticed by citizens”, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Kayed said in a statement that the odour reached the city due to the change in wind direction. He said that the phenomenon is “natural” due to activity at the ports, noting that the smell “does not pose any danger to public health”, Petra reported.

He added that the hazardous materials (hazmat) team at the Aqaba Civil Defence Department was directed to inspect all companies in the governorate, stressing that the team “did not record anything abnormal”.
