134 schools benefit from renewable energy upgrades under school heating project

AMMAN — Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources and Chairperson of the Jordan Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund (JREEEF) Hala Zawati on Wednesday handed over the files of 134 schools from various governorates, where renewable energy projects and energy saving methods were implemented, to Minister of Education Tayseer Nueimi.

During the handover ceremony, Zawati delivered a briefing on the School Heating Project valued at JD9 million, which was implemented as part of a Royal Initiative to provide appropriate class environments, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. 

The project’s plan is designed to cover 2,600 schools over the coming years, taking into account the different climates of the Kingdom, the minister said, noting that it will be implemented in 30 new schools by the end of 2020.

For his part, Minister of Education Tayseer Nueimi said that the project accomplishes a number of national and educational goals in terms of rationalising energy consumption and providing a safe, attractive and stimulating educational environment for students, which enhances the children’s connection with their schools and raises their levels of educational achievement.

JREEEF Director Rasmi Hamzeh said that the project included the installation of about 46,000 high-quality LED lighting units, 3,330 air conditioning units and 134 solar power systems with a capacity of 2.7 megawatts to provide a sustainable source for electricity.
