‘22,187 electricity thefts uncovered in 2016’

AMMAN — A total of 22,187 electricity thefts were recorded in 2016, of which 12,641 were discovered by the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC), the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Tuesday.
EMRC Chief Commissioner Farouq Hiyari said the cases were recorded as part of 164 inspection tours conducted by EMRC staff, as well as visits to electricity companies’ facilities to assess the conditions of the power grid throughout the Kingdom.
The EMRC inspects 12 companies working to generate electricity from renewable energy sources and follows up on their progress to ensure the construction of their stations is in accordance with the regulations of their licences, the chief commissioner said, adding that the commission conducted 64 inspections of renewable energy stations in the Kingdom.
