58,125 seats up for grabs at public universities in regular programme

AMMAN — The Higher Education Council (HEC) on Tuesday decided to accept 58,125 students at public universities in the regular programme.

The number included the Jordanian students who passed General Secondary Education Certificate Examination (Tawjihi) in its general and complementary sessions for 2019, 5 per cent for Jordanians who passed Tawjihi abroad, in addition to allocating 10 per cent of the seats for beneficiaries of Royal makruma (Royal benefaction) in badia schools and schools from underprivileged areas.

According to the HEC's statement carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, the decision also allocated a number of public university seats for students born to Jordanian women married to non-Jordanian men, along with available seats for students from community colleges and seats for students who finished school with non-Jordanian certificates.

The HEC also decided to allow the students to change their specialties within the same university or to choose a major in another university, through the unified admission website.

Tawjihi results determine which university a student can attend as well as what major the student can study.

This year's pass ratio totalled 60.2 per cent, with the results of the recent Tawjihi some of the highest ever recorded, as numbers indicate that tens of thousands of students scored 90 per cent or higher, and one student in the scientific stream scored 100 per cent.
