AMMAN — Acting Director-General of the Baptism Site Commission Abdul Aziz Adwan on Tuesday said that the number of visitors to the site increased by 300 per cent in 2022 compared to 2021, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Despite the rainy weather, European, Arab and Jordanian visitors flocked to the site, he said.
The number of visitors increased from 50,000 in 2021 to 150,000 in 2022, he noted. The commission has also allocated accessible paths leading to Tell Mar Elias, John the Baptist Spring and the river view for people with disabilities.
The passages were also renovated to facilitate the movement of all visitors. Improvements were also made to the water drainage channels, he said, adding that the churches adjacent to the river have been prepared for the celebration of Epiphany and the reception of pilgrims.
