AMMAN — The Public Security Department (PSD) said Thursday it has arrested 471 wanted suspects over the past two days within “a comprehensive security campaign” that spanned the entire Kingdom.

In a statement carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, the PSD said the campaign also netted 96 “wanted vehicles” and 85 drug cases, ranging between possession and abuse.

The department said security campaigns to apprehend outlaws and wanted suspects will continue, commending the public’s cooperation.

During a visit to the PSD on Thursday, Interior Minister Salameh Hammad said it is essential for security institutions to deal with all citizens with the utmost respect and responsibility in accordance with human rights and without discrimination,

At a meeting with PSD acting director Maj. Gen. Mahmoud Abu Jumaa and his assistants, Hammad referred to the continuous cooperation and coordination between the Interior Ministry and affiliated security institutions, according to another statement.

The minister added that the Kingdom receives increasing numbers of Arab and foreign tourists at this time of year, which requires good traffic and police plans to provide them with humanitarian, social and security requirements that make them feel safe and secure.

A Royal Decree was issued on Tuesday, appointing Hammad as minister of interior, replacing Hussein Majali, who had resigned earlier in the week.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour said the minister’s resignation was a result of the lack of coordination among security organisations.

PSD director Gen. Tawfiq Tawalbeh and Gendarmerie Department director Maj. Gen. Ahmad Sweilmin were also referred to retirement.
