Cold weekend forecast

AMMAN — The impact of a cold air mass and a depression, which brought rain and light snow to different parts of the country, will prevail on Friday, according to the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD).

The effect of the combined weather conditions, which started affecting the country on Tuesday, is expected to taper off on Saturday morning, the JMD said on Thursday, adding that a weak spell of unstable weather is forecast for Sunday.

Laila Shaheen, a JMD meteorologist, told The Jordan Times that the northern governorates witnessed light snow accumulation on Wednesday, but it didn’t stick on the ground in Amman and Balqa, which also received snowfall at night.

“Snow accumulation in Ras Munif in Ajloun Governorate reached 6 millimetres. In the capital and elsewhere, the humidity levels were not high enough for the snow to stick. In addition, the cloud build up was not enough to turn the depression into a strong one,” Shaheen explained.

As the impact of the combined weather conditions is expected to prevail on Friday, it will be cold with intermittent rain, according to the JMD, which issued warnings of expected icy roads across the Kingdom, including the northern Jordan Valley, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

Temperatures on Friday will reach 8°C during the day and drop to 2°C overnight in Amman, while winds will be southwesterly moderate to brisk.

On Saturday, the weather will be cold and partly cloudy with the possibility of scattered showers during the day. Temperatures in the capital will range between a high of 10°C and a low of 3°C with southwesterly winds turning to northeasterly moderate at night.

A weak spell of unstable weather is forecast to prevail on Sunday, when it will be cold and partly cloudy with chances of light rain during the night, according to the JMD.

Winds will be southeasterly moderate and temperatures in Amman will reach a maximum of 11°C, dropping to a minimum of 5°C.
