Dam storage level reaches 25.3% after recent rainfall

AMMAN — The recent rainfall channelled around 23.5 million cubic metres (mcm) of water into the Waleh and Mujib dams over the past 24 hours, increasing the storage at all dams to 25.3 per cent, or 71.11mcm of their total storage of some 280mcm, the Water Ministry said on Wednesday.

Al Waleh Dam received 12.5mcm of water, increasing its storage to 12.625mcm (50.3 per cent), and Al Mujib Dam received some 10mcm of water, increasing its storage to 13.582mcm (55 per cent), while Zarqa Maeen/Madaba, Lajoun/Karak, and Karak dams did not receive any additional rainwater. 

The precipitation rate has reached 37.4 per cent so far in the season, constituting 47 per cent of the total rainfall received last year and 20.8 per cent of the same period last year. The highest precipitation was recorded in Khan Al Zabib/Madaba with 45mcm.

As for dam storage capacity, water level at Al Wihdeh Dam stands at 5.8mcm, reaching 5.5 per cent;  Arab Dam 5mcm at 30.4 per cent, Sharhabil 956,000cm at 24 per cent, Kufranjeh 1.8mcm at 23 per cent, Talal 21.8mcm at 32.6 per cent, Suaib 78,000mcm at 62.5 per cent, Kafrain 3.690mcm at 43.7 per cent, Zarqa Maeen 213,000 cubic metres at 10.6 per cent, Al Tannour 4.356mcm at 30.4 per cent, and Lajoun 130,000 cubic metres at 13 per cent.

At the governorate level, Amman received a total of 12.1mm of rainfall, followed by Zarqa with 5.5mm, Madaba 5mm, Balqa 4.6mm, Karak 4mm, Jerash 2.2mm, Mafraq 2mm, Tafileh 1.9mm, Maan 0.7mm and Aqaba with 0.3mm of rainwater, the ministry added.
