FM, EU representative discuss Mideast peace process, UNRWA

AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Monday met EU Special Representative for the Middle East Peace Process Sven Koopmans. 

The two sides discussed efforts towards maintaining calm in the occupied Palestinian territories and finding a political resolution to achieve a fair and comprehensive peace, in accordance with the two-state solution, international law and the Arab Peace Initiative, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Speaking to the newly appointed EU special representative, Safadi stressed that there is no alternative to the two-state solution that does not guarantee the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestine on the June 4, 1967 lines, living side by side a secure Israel. Safadi stressed that this is the way to end the conflict and realise a fair, comprehensive and lasting peace. 

The talks also covered efforts towards supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). 

Safadi expressed appreciation of the EU’s supportive stance for the agency. 

Safadi also highlighted the EU’s “key” role in opening “a real political horizon” to achieve peace and support the Palestinian economy. 

During the meeting, Koopmans valued the Kingdom’s efforts towards maintaining calm and ensuring peace opportunities, emphasising keenness on continuing cooperation with Jordan to restore momentum for the peace process.
