AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Sunday stressed the urgent need to stop the dangerous escalation in Gaza and the surrounding areas.

In a series of communications with a number of his counterparts, as part of Jordan's ongoing efforts to encourage the launch of immediate international action towards de-escalation, Safadi stressed the need to protect civilians and uphold international humanitarian law, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

Escalation would only fuel the conflict, increase violence and widen its scope, he said, calling for restraint and the initiation of practical measures to stop the violence, establish de-escalation and open a genuine political horizon that would halt the deterioration, restore confidence in the viability of peaceful initiatives and ensure a just and comprehensive peace that guarantees security and stability.

Safadi stressed that the immediate priority is to intensify efforts towards de-escalation. He emphasised that amid consequences of continued escalation and violence for the entire region, with its humanitarian, security, political and economic toll, all regional and international efforts must be focused on this objective.

A just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution is the sole way to security and stability, he reiterated.

Safadi held talks with Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani, UK Foreign Secretary and Minister of Commonwealth and Development  Affairs James Cleverly, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, Federal Chancellor for European and International Affairs  of Austria Alexander Schallenberg, Dutch Foreign Minister Hanke Bruins Slot, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

Safadi also received Italian Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Maria Tripodi and discussed efforts to halt the escalation in Gaza.

The discussions also covered the “friendly relations” between the two countries and ways of enhancing them in various fields, in addition to cooperation within the framework of the Aqaba process.
