AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Thursday highlighted the importance of the success of the meetings of the constitutional committee in efforts to reach a political solution that ends the Syrian crisis.

Speaking during a meeting of the Syria’s Mini-Constitutional Committee, held through video conference, Safadi stressed the need to intensify efforts aimed to reach a political solution that is accepted by Syrians, maintain the country’s unity, preserve its interests, eliminate terrorism, result in the return of all foreign troops and allow the voluntary return of refugees.

The minister reiterated the Kingdom’s support to Geir Pedersen, the special envoy of the UN secretary general for Syria, and his endeavours to resume the meetings of the constitutional committee in a bid to realise progress in the Syrian peace process, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

He also called for providing humanitarian assistance necessary to alleviate the suffering of Syrians in areas that need this aid, mainly in the southern parts of the country.

The meeting was called for by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and saw the participation of foreign ministers of Egypt and Saudi Arabia and ministers of state of Germany and the UK and secretary general of the French foreign ministry.

Attendees issued a joint statement, in which they stressed that there is no military solution to the crisis in Syria and that the only path to stability and peace in Syria is through a political solution based on UN Resolution 2254.
