Georgian ambassador affirms Kingdom’s role in peace and stability 

AMMAN — Georgia's Ambassador to Jordan Zaza Kandelaki on Monday stressed the key role that Jordan plays, under the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah, in achieving peace and stability in the region.

At a press conference celebrating Georgia's national day, Kandelaki noted that both countries are "eager" to maintain their "outstanding" relations, and collaborate and build upon previous accomplishments, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. 

The ambassador also underscored the significance of Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili's visit to Jordan last year, during which the foundation stone was laid for a Georgian Cultural Centre at the Baptism Site.

The Georgian Cultural Centre helped cement Jordanian-Georgian ties and attract more Georgian visitors to the site, especially those visit Jordan for religious tourism, the diplomat said. The new centre is expected to encourage some 100,000 Georgian tourists visiting Jerusalem to also pay a visit to Jordan per year.

Kandelaki also noted that both countries are seeking to establish regular charter flights between the two nations. Regularly scheduled flights are intended to enhance economic cooperation and increase the exchange of tourists, especially since Georgia is a top destination for Jordanians, he explained. 

There are many commonalities between the two countries, Kandelaki noted, adding that both Jordan and Georgia play a main role in achieving security and stability in the Middle East and Caucasus regions, while also maintaining their own domestic security and stability. 

Though economic cooperation between the two countries remains modest, there is potential for growth and development as the two nations work towards advancing collaboration, the ambassador said.

In response to a question, Kandelaki stressed the importance for the Palestinians and Israelis to resume negotiations in a bid to gradually reach a political solution.
