High sales tax must be revisited — Minister of State

AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State Rajai Muasher on Friday said that, citing figures by Association of Banks in Jordan, 63 per cent of Jordanians’ salaries are allocated to repaying bank loans and the remaining 37 per cent is used to cover health, educational, transport and cloth expenditures.
In an interview with the Jordan Television’s 60 Minutes programme, Muahser said that such figures mean that the sales tax directly affects citizens’ needs, stressing that the sales tax is high and has to be revisited.
On reasons for not cancelling or lowering the sales tax, the minister said that the Kingdom annually needs JD8 billion to sustain salaries and health, educational and other services, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
