HPC reaffirms commitment to improving reproductive, sexual healthcare

AMMAN — The Higher Population Council (HPC) on Monday launched the national plan to implement the Kingdom’s commitment to the 2019 Nairobi Summit and the International Conference for Population and Development, with the support of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).

HPC Secretary General Issa Masarweh said that the plan was launched in cooperation with all national stakeholders. 

The plan reviews the population status in Jordan in addition to demographic, social and economic data, with a focus on reproductive and sexual health, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Masarweh noted that the plan addresses challenges in reproductive and sexual health and is supported by figures and statistics issued by stakeholders.

He added that the plan also goes over the 12 commitments of the Nairobi Summit, showcasing the Kingdom’s commitment to improving conditions related to reproductive and sexual health.

Layali Abu Seir, official in charge of the population and development programme at UNFPA, said that the Nairobi Summit is aimed to set “a clear path to achieving justice for all women and girls”.

She stressed the importance of such endeavours to ensure that “no one is left behind”, noting that these efforts also help realise the Sustainable Development Goals. 

She added that UNFPA personnel in Jordan work jointly with national partners to prepare plans and programmes that contribute to reaching national goals.

Director of programmes at HPC Sawsan Daaja delivered a presentation on the national plan to implement commitments of the Nairobi Summit 2021-2030, noting that Jordan will continue to honour its pledges to offer information, counselling and family planning services.
