Jordan condemns Israeli construction of tower on Al Aqsa Mosque Compound

AMMAN — Jordan on Monday condemned the Israeli authorities' construction of a tower atop the Tankiziyya School, located on the western wall of the Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif, deeming the action a "flagrant violation of international law and the historical and legal status quo of Jerusalem and its holy sites".

Sufian Qudah, the spokesperson for the ministry, emphasised that the Tankiziyya is an integral part of the Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif Complex, a site recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra. 

He also underscored the urgent need for the international community to intervene and take decisive measures to safeguard the cultural heritage of Jerusalem’s Old City. He also stressed the importance of adherence to UNESCO conventions and resolutions in this regard.

Qudah also warned about the potential repercussions of Israel’s persistent breaches of international law, denouncing the ongoing restrictions on worshippers’ access to the Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif, especially as the holy month of Ramadan approaches.
