Jordan, Cyprus discuss ties, region

AMMAN — Jordan and Cyprus on Monday discussed the latest regional developments and means to enhance bilateral ties.

At a meeting with Cypriot Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour voiced Jordan’s keenness on enhancing its relations with Cyprus in all fields, describing the Mediterranean Island as an important partner and neighbour of Jordan.

The two sides also stressed the importance of relaunching peace negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis in accordance with the two-state solution.

Ensour reiterated Jordan’s unaltered position on Syria, which advocates a political solution that can safeguard the country’s territorial unity and end the large-scale suffering of its people.

Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh also met separately with Kasoulides, who delivered a written letter from Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades to His Majesty King Abdullah on means to enhance bilateral relations.

The two officials highlighted the available opportunities to bolster cooperation, citing geographic proximity and overlapping interests.

Talks also covered regional developments, especially international efforts to combat radicalism and terrorist organisations, in addition to peace efforts.

In addition, Judeh and Kasoulides discussed the situation in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Libya as well as resource-limited Jordan’s economic and security challenges resulting from hosting large numbers of Syrian refugees.
