AMMAN — The Foreign Ministry on Monday denounced the continuous break-ins by Israeli settlers at Al Aqsa Mosque and the restrictions imposed by Israel on Palestinians in the Old City of Jerusalem.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Sufian Qudah, in a statement, said that Israel, as the occupying power in East Jerusalem, must abide by its obligations under international law and international humanitarian law.

Qudah called for an immediate halt to all actions and violations targeting the sanctity of the Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif.

The spokesperson said that the 144-dunum Al Aqsa Mosque is solely an Islamic holy site and emphasised that Israel has no sovereignty over occupied East Jerusalem and cannot impose restrictions on access to the Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif.

He reiterated that the Jordan-run Jerusalem Awqaf and Aqsa Affairs Department is the sole authority tasked with supervising all its affairs.

The spokesperson said that the continuous and unacceptable provocative actions targeting Al Aqsa Mosque, including its compound, are clear violations of international law and undermine the historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem and its holy sites.
