Jordan keen on implementing Arab summit resolutions — FM

AMMAN — Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Tuesday chaired a meeting of a committee tasked with following up on the implementation of the decisions made at the Arab summit in Amman last March, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

During the meeting, held at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo, Safadi stressed Jordan's keenness on implementing the decisions to serve the interests and causes of the Arab nation.

For their part, foreign ministers of the member countries expressed appreciation for the Kingdom's efforts in this regard, Petra said.

The ministers discussed the latest developments of the Palestinian issue, the Syrian crisis and the situation in Libya and Yemen.

They also discussed the Iranian intervention in Arab affairs and occupying three UAE islands, means to conserve the Arab national security and combating terrorism, in addition to supporting Lebanon, Djibouti and Somalia.

The committee comprises representatives of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Mauritania, Algeria, and Djibouti, in addition to the league's Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

In a separate meeting, Safadi and Aboul Gheit discussed means to enhance joint Arab action and the role of the Arab League in pan-Arab affairs.

Also on Tuesday, Safadi attended the 148th ordinary session of the Arab League’s council at the ministerial level, where he described the two-state solution to the Mideast conflict as a pre-requisite to realise peace and stability in the region and as a main requirement to “dismantle the environment of despair” that terrorism feeds on, Petra reported.

He added that preserving Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem and maintaining the historical and legal status quo at Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif is a top priority for Jordan.

The minister said that defeating terrorism is a priority as dictated by “our values, security needs and the right of regional peoples to live in peace and security”.

He highlighted the importance of reaching a political solution to the Syrian crisis in accordance with Geneva 1 resolutions and UN Security Council Resolution 2254, in a way that preserves the unity of Syria. 

On the sidelines of the meeting, Safadi and his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukri discussed bilateral relations between Amman and Cairo and means to boost them.

The two officials went over regional issues and the latest developments in the region, especially the Palestinian issues and means to coordinate relevant positions, prior to the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly.

While in Cairo, Safadi also met with UNRWA Commissioner General Pierre Krahenbuhl over means to find a sustainable financing mechanism to address the financial crisis facing the international agency.

They also discussed major issues to be discussed during a high-level meeting, which will be held on the sidelines of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly, that will be jointly organised by Jordan, Sweden and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Petra added.
