Jordan ranks 4th in Arab world, 95th globally on UN Women’s 2018 political participation scale

AMMAN — Jordan ranked 4th in the Arab world, 95th globally, on the UN Women’s 2018 political participation ladder.
UN Women is the United Nations entity that tackles gender equality and women empowerment issues.
The Solidarity is Global Institute (SIGI) on Wednesday praised the progress made nationally in the field of supporting Jordanian women politically, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, said.
Arab women ministerial representation was weak in some countries and absent in others, according to the report that surveyed 188 countries worldwide, according to Petra.
Mauritania topped Arab countries in the women’s ministerial representation category, with 31.8 per cent, placing 37th worldwide, Petra noted.
The UAE ranked second with 29 per cent, 48th internationally, followed by Egypt, at 24.2 per cent, placing 73rd worldwide, the report highlighted.
Jordan’s ministerial representation ratio stood at 20.8 per cent, , ranking the Kingdom fourth on the regional scale, Petra reported.
On the parliamentary level, Tunisia ranked first in the Arab world, with 35.9 per cent of its parliament made up of women.
For the Arab world as a region, the report showed that women comprise some 18.1 per cent of Arab parliaments, Petra reported.
Women comprise 15.4 per cent of the Jordanian Parliament, the report stated.
SIGI also called on maintaining the momentum of legal and political reforms leading to the advances underlined in the statement.
The organisation also highlighted the various national Jordanian agendas and strategies, particularly the Kingdom’s 2025 vision, on increasing women participation in the public sphere, Petra noted.
SIGI also highlighted the importance of eliminating all forms of discrimination and increasing women’s participation in the legislative body and their quota, the news agency added.
