Jordan renews anti-terror stand in anti-Daesh coalition meeting

AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah met on Wednesday with Iraq’s Defence Minister Khalid Obeidi at Al Husseiniya Palace and discussed regional issues. 

At the meeting, the King and the Iraqi official discussed the latest regional developments, according to a statement from the Royal Court.

They also reviewed the Iraqi government’s efforts in combating terrorist groups as well as cooperation between the two countries, especially in military fields, according to the statement. 

Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour also met with Obeid, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

During his visit to Amman, the Iraqi top defence official attended the macro-committee of member states of the US-led coalition against the Daesh terror group.

In his opening remarks at the gathering, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh reiterated that Jordan is determined on eliminating terrorism, stressing the need for international efforts to combat the phenomena.

Judeh noted that Jordan has been always in forefront of the war against terrorism and radicalism, saying that Jordan will maintain an effective participation in all efforts seeking to eradicate radicalism which he described as a stray ideology that has nothing to do with Islam, Petra reported.

During the meeting, Obeidi presented a briefing on Iraq’s military campaign against Daesh, expressing appreciation for the international assistance to his country in its anti-terror drive, according to Petra. 

US special envoy to the anti-Daesh coalition Gen. John Allen also presented a briefing on the progress in the war, highly valuing the leading role of Jordan in the coalition and in the anti-terror efforts in general.

The meeting in Amman was meant to follow up on the outcomes of the ministerial meeting of the macro-committee of member states of the anti-Daesh coalition which was held in January in London.
