Jordan signs charter to protect Byzantine heritage

AMMAN — Jordan ratified the Charter for the Protection of the Byzantine Heritage Monuments, said officials with the Madaba Antiquities Department and the Madaba Institute for Mosaic Art and Restoration on Sunday.

Institute Director Ahmad Amaireh and Director of the Madaba Antiquities Department Basim Mahamid said Jordan participated in the 4th International Conference on “Byzantine Monuments and World Heritage”, held in Thessaloniki, Greece, from November 30 through December 3, during which the charter was signed.

Mahamid said the charter aims at preserving Byzantine monuments for future generations around the Mediterranean region. The officials noted that Jordan played a role in enacting the charter, which reflects its commitment to safeguarding human heritage, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The European Centre for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments organised the conference, which saw the participation of 21 countries.
