Jordanian delegation takes part in International Labour Conference

AMMAN — A Jordanian delegation, headed by Labour Minister Nidal Bataineh, began participating in the 108th Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva on Monday.

The delegation includes 20 Jordanians from the three pillars of production: the government, business owners and employees. The group is taking part in the ILC as part of cooperation efforts with the international community to achieve development goals, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Bataineh highlighted Jordan’s role in the ILC meetings as well as its need for the international community’s support to continue to face the refugee crises.

During the conference, the delegation will also exchange experiences with delegations from other countries involving economic and social crises like poverty, unemployment and child labour.

The annual conference will bring together 6,000 representatives from the 187 member states of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), in order to discuss issues and subjects related to the world of labour, ILO reports and implementing international labour standards.

This year, Bataineh will deliver a speech on the future of labour and the rest of the delegation will participate in the conference’s public sessions and coordinate with representatives of Arab countries to consolidate stances towards topics and discuss join efforts to serve developing Arab labour markets, according to Petra.

The ILO’s director general, Guy Ryder, is also scheduled to present his report for this session, under the title “Work for a Brighter Future”, which will cover refreshing the social contract and adopting a labour programme that focuses on people.

Jordan in 2018 won the ILC’s 107th session presidency and this year a new country will be elected, Petra reported. The 108th session ends on June 21.
