AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah, the Supreme Commander of the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF), on Thursday visited the General Command of the JAF, where His Majesty was received by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Maj. Gen. Yousef Huneiti and a number of senior officers.

King Abdullah met with Huneiti to discuss a number of operational, training and logistic issues concerning the JAF and affirmed his pride in JAF personnel, expressing confidence in their advanced level of armament and training, a Royal Court statement said.

His Majesty also expressed pride and confidence in the current leadership of security agencies and these agencies’ efforts to safeguard Jordan’s security and stability.

A Royal Decree has been issued appointing Maj. Gen. Yousef Huneiti as chairman of the joint chiefs of staff as of Wednesday, while another referred Lt. Gen. Mahmoud Freihat to retirement.

In a letter to Huneiti on Wednesday, the King stressed the need to fully support the JAF to ensure that the army remains a shining example of discipline, dedication, efficiency and professionalism, directing Huneiti to develop, restructure and build the capacities of the armed forces.

On Thursday, the King received a letter from Huneiti responding to His Majesty, in which he expressed pride and gratitude for being tasked with this responsibility, noting that the JAF will remain committed to safeguarding the homeland and defending the nation’s causes, as well as national and Arab security.

The new army chief said King Abdullah’s letter will guide his work and chart the way forward to enhance the capacities of the JAF and keep up with regional and global developments through modernisation and restructuring, according to the statement.

Also on Thursday the King received a letter from retired Lt. Gen. Mahmoud Freihat, the former chairman of the joint chiefs of staff.

In the letter, Freihat highlighted the great attention King Abdullah has always given to the JAF, so that it has become an example of professionalism and excellence recognised around the world.

He also underscored the JAF’s commitment to the principles of the Great Arab Revolt, noting its humanitarian role and its efforts to safeguard the homeland in the face of regional challenges.

Freihat concluded the letter by reaffirming his commitment to serving Jordan.
