King receives IEC’s report on municipal, governorate council elections

AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Monday received the Independent Election Commission’s (IEC) report on the municipal and governorate council elections held in March.
King Abdullah was briefed by IEC Chief Commissioner Musa Maaytah on the measures that were taken during the electoral process and the achievements included in the report, according to a Royal Court statement.
His Majesty commended the efforts of IEC staff, voicing support to developing the commission’s role in promoting public engagement in the electoral process and partisan life.
The King underscored the importance of bolstering youth and women participation in governorate council elections and other elections to empower them politically, noting that success in this regard requires teamwork.
His Majesty stressed the significance of the next phase in the political modernisation process, highlighting the key role of the IEC, with its mandate now encompassing political parties in accordance with the latest constitutional amendments.
Discussing the IEC’s plans in the upcoming phase, Maaytah said the commission is implementing training programmes to boost political engagement among youth and women, as well as train licensed political parties.
Royal Hashemite Court Chief Yousef Issawi and Director of the Office of His Majesty Jafar Hassan attended the meeting.
