‘Man charged with murdering ex-wife in Amman’

AMMAN — The Criminal Court prosecutor on Saturday charged a 44-year-old man with the premeditated murder of his ex-wife on Friday in Amman, allegedly over alimony feuds, official sources said.

The 36-year-old victim, a mother of three boys, was found dead at her home in an Amman suburb on Friday night, a judicial source said, adding that she had been strangled to death with her own pantyhose. 

Investigators who visited the scene collected evidence. They questioned the victim’s oldest son, who is seven, and were informed that her ex-husband was at her flat around the time of her murder, the judicial source told The Jordan Times.

“Police immediately arrested the victim’s ex-husband, a street vendor who sells coffee, without any major incident,” the judicial source said.

In his initial confession to police and Criminal Court Prosecutor Mohammad Bdairat, the suspect claimed that he went to visit his wife to see his three boys, including two three-year-old twins, and to discuss the alimony, according to the source.

“The couple had been separated for three years after five years of marriage, and the court ordered the suspect to pay a monthly alimony of JD190 for the victim and their three sons,” the judicial source said, quoting the suspect’s initial statement. 

The suspect claimed that he had an argument with his wife because “he was not paying her the alimony regularly” and that it became heated.

“The victim mistreated him so he became enraged and allegedly grabbed a pair of pantyhose that belonged to her and strangled her with it.

“The defendant has a strong build and he kept pulling on the victim’s neck with her pantyhose for around 20 minutes until he made sure she was dead,” the judicial source said.

The suspect then left the apartment and went back home to stay with his other wife, the source added.

Bdairat ordered that the suspect be detained at a correctional and rehabilitation centre for 15 days pending further investigation.
