AMMAN — The Cassation Court has upheld a November Criminal Court ruling sentencing a man to six years in prison after convicting him of attempting to murder a guard in Tafileh in September 2017.

The Criminal Court declared the defendant guilty of shooting the guard in the face causing permanent disability to one of his eyes on September 23 and handed him a 12-year prison term.

However, the court decided to reduce the sentence to half because the victim dropped charges against the defendant.

Court papers said that on the day of the incident, the defendant headed to a warehouse that the victim was guarding.

"The defendant was surprised by the victim and he grabbed his pump-action gun and fired one bullet striking the victim in the face," court papers said.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital and underwent several surgeries, but physicians determined that he lost sight in one of his eyes as a result of the injury, court papers said.

The Criminal Court’s attorney general had asked the higher court to uphold the sentence.

The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and correct and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment.

The Cassation Court bench comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Yassin Abdullat, Hammad Ghzawi, Saeed Mugheid and Naji Zu’bi.
