Man gets 8-year jail for attempted murder

AMMAN — The Cassation Court upheld an October Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a man to eight years in prison after convicting him of attempting to murder a man in Amman in July 2019. 

The Criminal Court declared the defendant guilty of stabbing the victim with a paper cutter on July 25 following “a heated argument”. 

The defendant was originally sentenced to 12 years in prison.

However, the court decided to reduce the sentence to eight years because the victim dropped charges against the defendant.

Court papers said the defendant had consumed alcohol and went to where the victim was hanging out.

A “heated argument” ensued between the two and the defendant drew “a paper cutter and slashed the victim’s chest with it”, according to court papers.

The victim survived the assault after undergoing surgery on his chest at a nearby hospital, the court papers added. 

The defendant did not contest the Criminal Court’s ruling.

The Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the ruling. 

The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment. 

The Cassation Court bench comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Yassin Abdullat, Nayef Samarat, Hammad Ghzawi and Mohammad Khashashneh.
