AMMAN — The Court of Cassation has upheld a June Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a man to 12 years in prison after convicting him of attempting to murder a man with a shawarma skewer in Ajloun in September 2020.

The Criminal Court declared the defendant guilty of attempted murder stemming from “a heated dispute” with the victim on September 28. The defendant was given the maximum sentence.

Court papers said the defendant phoned the victim and asked him to come to his house to discuss an old feud.

When the victim arrived, the defendant struck him on his head with a bottle, the court documents said.

“The defendant grabbed a shawarma skewer and stabbed the victim repeatedly on different parts of his body then left,” the court papers said.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital and survived the stabbing after undergoing surgery, the court papers added.

The defendant contested his ruling via his lawyer, arguing that there were “legal errors in the investigation procedures”.

The Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the 12-year sentence.

The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment.

The Cassation Court bench comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Fawzi Nahar, Hayel Amr, Majid Azab and Mohammad Sharaieri.
