AMMAN — The Court of Cassation has upheld a February 2022 Criminal Court ruling, sentencing a man to eight years in prison after convicting him of attempting to murder a man in Balqa Governorate in March 2019.

The Criminal Court declared the guilty of attempted murder, stemming from “a heated dispute” with the victim, on March 28.

The defendant was handed a 12-year prison term by the tribunal.

However, the court decided to reduce the sentence to eight years because the victim dropped charges against the defendant.

Court papers said the defendant visited the defendant who was staying at a farm in Deir Ala.

The two engaged in a heated argument shortly after the defendant arrived at the premises, the court stated.

"The defendant drew a sharp object and stabbed the victim in the chest causing a severe injury,” court documents said.

The victim fell unconscious, the court maintained, while the defendant fled from the area.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital and survived the stabbing incident after undergoing a few surgeries, the court papers added.

The defendant contested his ruling via his lawyer arguing that there were “legal errors in the investigation procedures”.

The Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the eight-year sentence ruling.

The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and that the defendant was given the appropriate punishment.

The Cassation Court bench comprised judges Mahmoud Ebtoush, Nayef Ghzawi, Hammad Ghzawi, Mohammad Shreir and Mohammad Khashashneh.
